About Zomba Forest Reserve

Zomba Forest Reserve is located on the slopes of the Zomba Plateau in southern Malawi and covers a substantial area of montane forest and grassland. The reserve stands out for its unique blend of indigenous and exotic species, with patches of native Miombo woodland and large stands of pine plantations established during colonial times. It rises to an elevation of approximately 2,227 meters (7,306 feet) at the Zomba Plateau summit, providing cooler temperatures and an escape from the surrounding lowlands' heat. Zomba Plateau offers various hiking trails suitable for casual walks to more strenuous treks, with routes traversing forested areas, waterfalls, and viewpoints overlooking the Shire River valley and the vast expanse of surrounding plains. Wildlife includes several bird species, baboons, antelope, and occasionally butterflies and other insects unique to the montane microclimate. The area has historical significance, once used as a retreat by colonial administrators and now managed for both conservation and sustainable timber production. Outdoor enthusiasts visit for hiking, birdwatching, picnicking, and mountain biking, with the plateau’s cool climate creating favorable conditions year-round. The forest reserve’s combination of natural beauty, ecological importance, and accessible facilities make it a popular destination for both local and international visitors. The plateau also supports several small lodges and campsites, providing bases for extended exploration of this diverse landscape.
